Raman Raghav 2.0 - The Movie
"You know the best part of killing someone? The look on their face. It's that look. Not when they're threatened. Not when you hurt them. Not even when they see the knife. It's when they feel the knife go in. That's it. It's surprise. They just can't believe it's really happening to them. She had that look, the girl, when she knew it wasn't just porno. I was never beaten. I was never molested. Mommy didn't abuse me. Daddy never raped me. I'm only what I am. And that's all there is to it! There's no mystery. Things I do, I do them because I like them! Because I want to!"
- George Higgins, a character in the 1999 Nicolas Cage movie '8mm' about a snuff film.
I think this was maybe the central idea of the film Raman Raghav 2.0, The scary, crude, incomprehensible motivation that fuels the actions of a serial killer. It is true for one of the character at least. The other has something to blame it on.
I wanted to like the movie. I really did. Throughout the movie I kept reassuring myself, "Wait" I said, "it'll turn here... ok here.", but, alas, my hope was split wide open with a blunt self-indulgent L-Shaped crude iron rod, from the first scene at regular intervals, right till the last frame.
The movie has no real purpose. It's a story (actually not even a story) of two, Raman (Nawaz) and Raghav (Vicky) mentally challenged bad guys. The reference to the serial killer by the same name who terrorised the city in the 60's has very little relevance. You neither sympathize or empathize with either one of them for obvious reasons (believe me, there are lots). Tho Raman is the driving force in the plot and does what he does all that he does for some misplaced ideology, Raghav is doing all he does because he abuses drugs. (at least that's what comes through)
The writer's effort to make the reason and motivation of the psycho killer palpable towards the end is really a lame yet a scary one.
If I have to draw an analogy for my humble opinion, I'd say the Performances have been the Julius Caesar (Vicky, Shobita, Amruta are good, Nawaz is repetitive) who are brutally murdered by rest of the faculties. The direction being Brutus of course, while the rest added their two bits. For example, I really couldn't understand why Anurag wanted to draw sympathy for either of the characters through music, while the script/story leaves a lot to be desired.
There is this particular scene that is NOT included in the film. I cannot fathom, why? For there one particular scene in which this character (Raghav) shows a blip of compassion towards his mother over the phone. I couldn't place it.
But again, who am I to say?
